A Great Forest
Vehova Art Space Gallery, Moscow19 April to 19 May 2017
Unlike the ancient Venus that was born from sea foam, the Russian Venus emerged from the forest, according to artist Boris Kocheishvili. Russian forest, the dense thicket, embodies a primordial, deeply personal space, the point of origin of national self-awareness and mentality.
For Kocheishvili, however, the forest is not only a mythological image but also a plastic one. The thicket and the clearing, the forest and the field, much like the colonnade and entablature in ancient culture, represent two fundamental ways in which inanimate matter exists in a space.

A Free Alphabet
Zdes Gallery, Moscow16 April to 17 May 2016
Boris Kocheishvili has often said, “In art, the one who survives is not the one who can pronounce the entire alphabet, but the one who masters a single letter.” Yet, in his own work, he seems to “articulate” the entirety of Russian culture—ranging from Andrei Rublev’s "Deesis" to Chekhov’s "Three Sisters"; from the renowned architectural masterpiece of Russian Baroque, the Church of the Sign of the Holy Virgin in Dubrovitsy, to the Constructivist innovations of Konstantin Melnikov.
