The Second Birth
The Second Birth
Gallery 2.36, Moscow 26 October to 18 November 2011

The exhibition of Boris Kocheishvili’s graphic works, "Second Birth", became part of the "Fragments" series. Due to a number of circumstances, these works—created nearly 40 years ago—were presented to the public for the first time.

The pieces included in the exhibition possess a distinctive charm, enhanced in no small part by the story of their survival. Provenance, after all, significantly enriches the perception of any artwork. As it happened, Kocheishvili created this series in the late 1960s–early 1970s and, some time later, entrusted them to a colleague for safekeeping. The next time he saw them was… in 2010. By then, after passing through several “custodians,” the works had spent nearly thirty years in the possession of renowned art historian Yuri Gerchuk, who ultimately returned them to the artist intact and well-preserved in 2010.

These graphic sheets embody an extraordinary fusion of profound sensuality, fluid plasticity, and a subtle intrigue—an anticipation of an imminent event, a long-awaited encounter just about to take place. This sense of expectation, tied to the artist’s youthful energy and temperament, was characteristic of the vibrant and eventful art scene of the late 1960s–early 1970s. It was around this time that Kocheishvili developed his unique technique of drawing with ink on coated (glossy) paper. He created a vast number of works in this manner, many of which are now housed in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, numerous regional museums and private collections in Russia and abroad.
